Vidal El Legado Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2016
A wine of international standard showing intensity, texture and depth of flavor. This perfumed Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend from the infamous Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing district shows intense aromatics with notes of cassis, black olives and ground black pepper.
"This dense, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot blend feels as though you're taking a bite out of it rather than drinking it. It's 80% Cab dominant and it shows, with a nose of cassis, black olive, graphite, cola and ground black pepper. On the palate, the muscular, chewy tannins take over, and the oak is apparent, too. Both should settle considerably with time in the bottle, morphing this wine into a rather classy creature. Drink 2021–2031." – 92 Points, Christina Pickard, Wine Enthusiast
2016 continued the four year run of strong Hawkes's Bay vintages. Spring and early summer were cooler than normal with Growing Degree Days falling below the long-term average. This cooler start to the growing season was punctuated by a very warm ripening period up to harvest – the warmest since the very hot 1998 vintage. Settled harvest conditions allowed picking decisions to be based purely on flavor and balance. Early season "green harvesting" to reduce yields and improve quality combined with meticulous vineyard management through the season was rewarded with ideal ripeness, flavor development concentration and tinnin maturity. Fruit for this wine was grown entirely in the premium Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing District where the soil is made up of relatively recent alluvial deposits of gravel with varying degrees of silt and sand, producing naturally free-draining sites.
