2019 Squawking Magpie The Chatterer Merlot Cabernets

Hawke's Bay

This wine is deep in color with a layered fragrant nose of ripe plum and cassis with lifted vanilla, cedar and tobacco notes. The palate has a rich velvet texture with excellent structure, ripe black fruits and cassis
flavors with a long full finish.

Winemaker's notes

The start of the 2019 growing season was wet and cool, but this season will be remembered for the glorious last 3 months of fine, warm, dry, late summer and autumn weather, allowing grapes to ripen and be picked in ideal conditions. Disease pressure was low; grapes were ripe with good flavor concentration and excellent sugar and acid balance.

Grapes were grown on the warm free draining gravel soil of the Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing District in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. Age of vines 17 years. Hand and machine picked using a select head machine, the grapes were in optimal health and ripeness.

Handcrafted with attention to detail - Fermented in small stainless steel vats with daily, gentle manual working of the cap. Post ferment maceration to achieve balance between the fruit weight and tannin structure. Matured for 16 months in small French oak barrels.
